Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition in which those who have experienced a traumatic event have distressing thoughts or feelings long after the traumatic event has passed. Although anyone can be affected by PTSD, it is more commonly diagnosed in women. Common signs and symptoms of PTSD include:
- Flashbacks of the trauma
- Nightmares
- Avoiding certain places or people because of the traumatic event
- Easily startled, feeling on edge
- Angry outbursts
- Feelings of guilt or blaming oneself
- Loss of interest in usual activities
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) has been proven effective in helping individuals with PTSD overcome the trauma and feel more like themselves again. Also effective in helping individuals with PTSD is eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), where the therapist guides the client to process trauma memories, while simultaneously being engaged in and/or stimulated by a sensory activity.
