Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is defined as “pain lasting longer than three months OR pain persisting beyond the reasonable amount of time for an injury to heal”. Mental health conditions can sometimes worsen chronic pain, and chronic pain can sometimes worsen mental health conditions. Mental health conditions (e.g., anxiety, depression, and sleep problems) are common in individuals with chronic pain. Specifically, how we think, feel, and act (what we do and how we do it) can influence chronic pain, and vice versa. Physical factors (e.g., fatigue, distress, and muscle tension) can also influence chronic pain, and chronic pain can influence physical factors.
